Council Strategic Priorities

Council sets strategic priorities to identify the matters that require particular attention during its term and to help focus the Village’s limited financial, staff, and organizational capacity.

Strategic priorities help Council make choices about where to direct resources and provide guidance for the Village’s annual budget, work planning, projects, policy development, and other Council decisions.

Council reviews its priorities periodically to consider progress, changing community needs, emerging issues, available funding, organizational capacity, and other circumstances that may affect what can reasonably be accomplished.

Current Council Priorities

Council’s current priorities are organized into three categories:

NOW
The highest-priority matters receiving current attention and resources.

NEXT
Important matters Council intends to advance as capacity, funding, and progress on current priorities allow.

AFTER
Matters Council wishes to retain for future consideration but which are not currently a primary focus.

From Priorities to Action

Identifying a strategic priority does not, by itself, authorize a project or expenditure. Individual initiatives may still require further Council decisions, funding through the Five-Year Financial Plan, policy or bylaw changes, public engagement, regulatory approvals, or other steps before proceeding.

This approach allows Council to establish direction while considering affordability, staff capacity, competing demands, risk, and the Village’s responsibility to continue providing its regular municipal services.

Strategic Planning Documents

Council’s strategic priorities should be considered alongside the Village’s other planning and accountability documents:

  • Corporate Strategic Plan – identifies Council’s broader strategic direction and areas of focus.
  • Official Community Plan – establishes Kaslo’s long-term community vision and policy direction.
  • Five-Year Financial Plan – identifies how municipal services, projects, priorities, and other expenditures will be funded.
  • Annual Municipal Report – reports on municipal services, objectives, measures, and progress.

These documents are available through the Village’s Document Centre under Plans and Reports and Finance.
