Writing a Strong Nomination

Nominees are evaluated on three core qualities. When preparing your nomination, think about how the nominee demonstrates each one, and use clear, concrete examples.

Leadership & Initiative - How does the nominee step forward, take responsibility, or spark positive change?

Impact & Influence - What difference have they made? Who has benefited? What has changed because of them?

Collaboration & Inclusivity - How do they bring people together, build relationships, or create welcoming spaces?

Tips for a Compelling Nomination

Use real stories - Share specific examples that show the nominee in action.

Be concrete, not general - Instead of “works tirelessly,” describe what they do and why it matters.

Show the outcome - Explain how their efforts improved the community, supported others, or created lasting change.

Paint a picture - Assume the Selection Committee has never met the nominee—help them understand who this person is and why they stand out.

Nominator Statement (approx. 500 words)

Use this section to provide a full, well‑rounded picture of the nominee. Consider including:

  • Their story and what motivates them
  • Examples of leadership, mentorship, or advocacy
  • How they go above and beyond in their volunteer or work roles
  • Challenges they’ve faced or overcome
  • What is different in Kaslo because of them
  • Any context or background that helps explain their impact

Support Letters

Support letters must:

  • Be written by people other than the nominator
  • Be addressed to the Citizen of the Year Selection Committee
  • Include the writer’s full name and contact information
  • Describe the nominee’s impact in detail
  • Explain the relationship between the writer and the nominee
  • Be written by people who know the nominee well and can speak from firsthand experience

Tip: Request letters early to ensure they are thoughtful and complete.

Additional Materials

You may include up to five items, such as:

  • A short biography or résumé
  • Additional letters of support
  • Links to articles, photos, or short videos
  • Testimonials or project summaries

If more than ten pages, five minutes of video, or five links are submitted, only the first items within those limits will be reviewed.

Updating a Previous Nomination

Nominations remain active for three years. To update a past submission:

  • Indicate that you are providing an update to a previous nomination
  • Indicate the original year of nomination
  • Add new information or materials
  • You may reuse previous support letters or submit new ones

If you need a copy of your previous submission, contact the Village.

Confidentiality

All nominations are kept confidential. Nominators will be notified once the Selection Committee has completed its review. Updated information is always welcome, as it helps reflect the nominee’s ongoing contributions.
